The Strathcona Hotle is the oldest wood frame commercial buildint on Whyte Avenue. It was builty by the Calgary and Edmonton Railway company in 1891 and was originally called the Hotel Edmonton. Although not as large as the imposing CPR railway hotels, the Strathcona had a reputation for first class accomodations. This would have been one of the first spots people newly arriving in the city would have seen when they disembarked from the train. Business suffered greatly during Prohibition when the sale of liquor was banned (the Strathcona has always been a good place to socialize). For a brief period the hotel was home to the Westminster Ladies College but returned to it's role as a hotel and tavern when Prohibition ended. This is a building with a very long and continuous history in the community and one of the very few original woodframe buildings to escape destruction by fire or disrepair.
