Help

How to login:

  • On the main page of the website on the right side of the page is the login box.
  • Type the username provided by Dr. Natalie Kononenko in the top box, beside “Username.”
  • Type in the password provided by Dr. Kononenko in the bottom box, beside “Password.”

How to check out an Audio Clip:

  • To play the audio, press the play button. To skip forward, click with the mouse on the sound bar. To pause the audio, press pause.
  • Once you have found a clip you would like to checkout, click on “edit.” This will put the clip into your “My Clip” table at the top of the “Sound Files” page.
  • To start working on the audio clip on the clip on the song you selected in the “My Clips” table.

How to use the audio player:

  • To play click on the play button.
  • To pause the audio, click on the pause button.
  • To stop the recording from playing, press stop.
  • To skip forward through the audio, click on the sound bar where you want to listen.

How to transcribe or translate:

  • Once you have checked out an audio clip, click on “Edit” or on the title in “My Clips” to take you to the transcription/translation page.
    • Clicking on these links will take you to the transcription and translation page. This is the only way to get to this page because you need to open an audio clip.
  • The left text box is if you are transcribing the information.
  • The right text box is if you are translating.
  • If you need a Cyrillic keyboard click on the link… WHERE WILL KARL PUT THIS?
  • If you do not wish to use the word processor provided you can download the audio clip to the desktop by clicking on the link. You can then use your own word processor and then copy and paste the text into the text box on the site.
  • To save your work press “Save” button on the bottom of the screen with your mouse.
    • The screen will refresh and at the top of the page in green writing will be “Your edits were saved successfully.”
  • To submit your work press “Submit.”
    • After pressing submit, the site will take you back to “My Clips” page. At the top of that page in green writing will be “Your edits were submitted successfully.”

How to add keywords:

  • What is a Keyword?
    • Keywords are terms that you believe describe or represent any themes, topics, or emotions in the document that you are working with. An example is applying the keywords “Flowering Fern” could be luck, fortune, holiday, and/or gift.
  • On the “Edit Clip” page there is a bar above the two text boxes.
  • Enter as many words as you would like that describe or relate to the song, belief, or narrative that you are working on.
  • Clicking on “Save” also saves keywords.
  • Clicking on “Submit” submits the keywords as well.

How to ask a question, report a problem or comment on the site:

  • On the left side of the “Edit Clip” page is a list of links to help volunteers.
  • “Help with…” options take you to the help page you are currently on to troubleshoot any problems that you are having.
  • If you click on “Comments” you go to a webpage where you can type any comments that you may have.
    • The page will have your name, the name of the audio clip that you are currently working on, and a text box where you write any comments you have.
    • Comment can be about, but are not limited to, audio clips, transcriptions, translations, keywords, downloading audio clip, the audio player, Cyrillic keyboard, copy and pasting, etc.
    • Once you have finished writing your comment(s) press the submit button. The comments will be sent to Dr. Kononenko and Maryna Chernyavska.
    • A message will appear once you send the comment, “Your message was sent successfully.”
    • Click on “Okay” button to return to the “Edit Clip” page.
  • If you click on “Question to Editors,” you go to a new page where you can type any questions that you may have.
    • The page will have your name, the name of the audio clip that you are currently working on, and a text box where you write any questions you have.
    • Once you have finished writing your question(s) press the submit button. The questions will be sent to Dr. Kononenko and Maryna Chernyavska.
    • A message will appear once you send the question(s), “Your message was sent successfully.”
    • Click on “Okay” button to return to the “Edit Clip” page.
  • If you click on “Report a Problem,” you go to a new page where you can type any questions that you may have.
    • The page will have your name, the name of the audio clip that you are currently working on, and a text box where you write any problem(s) you have.
    • Once you have finished writing your problem(s) press the submit button. WHO WILL THIS BE SENT TOO?
    • A message will appear once you send the problem(s), “Your message was sent successfully.”
    • Click on “Okay” button to return to the “Edit Clip” page.


  • How will we respond to comments and questions?
