10 Usability Heuristics

Nielson, Jakob. “10 Usability Heuristics”. Nielson Norman Group. Retrieved from: http://www.nngroup.com/articles/ten-usability-heuristics/ .

Based on a factor analysis of 249 usability problems, Nielson refined a set of the ten most general usability heuristics designed for maximum explanatory power. The ten are:

  • Visibility of system status.
  • Match between system and the real world.
  • User control and freedom.
  • Consistency and standards.
  • Error prevention.
  • Recognition rather than recall.
  • Flexibility and efficiency of use.
  • Aesthetic and minimalist design.
  • Helping users recognize, diagnose, and recover from errors.
  • Help and documentation.
