Purpose

A quick look at online analytic tools available to digital humanities scholars indicates that almost all efforts are limited to a Web 1.0 paradigm of providing resources: users are expected go to individual sites and use the resources in situ. For instance, MONK (monkproject.org) is a powerful data mining application for literary analysis, but all operations on done on the site itself. HyperPo (hyperpo.org) allows users to specify texts that exist elsewhere on the web, but the environment is still site-centric. Taporware (taporware.mcmaster.ca) offers some web services in addition to its web interface, but the web services can be difficult to use and lacks robustness. The TAPoR Portal is a unique aggregation of online tools located elsewhere on the web, but again it relies on users accessing the tools through a single point of access. A further issue for existing web-based text analysis environments is that functionality is most often presented in ways that are fundamentally unfamiliar for many humanities scholars (Warwick 2009): tabular frequency data and even keyword-in-context grids require a leap of faith for scholars who are used to reading texts. In short, we need to understand how best to integrate analytic modules into content provided by digital humanities projects. This will require us to study what web frameworks are being used by projects as well as how tools might be best customized for different types of users (beginner, intermediate, advanced) and different content (journals, text collections, library databases, blogs, etc.). By conducting this interview we hope to determine which tools publishers like you would like to see embedded into journals or blogs.

Your Participation

Your Participation involves a short 30 minute interview in which we hope to determine what kinds of analytical tools you would see beneficial to be embedded into your journal or blog. At the end of the interview I will type up my notes and send them to you for editing.

Your Rights

Your decision to participate in this study is entirely voluntary and you may decide at any time to withdraw from the study. During the interview you may skip over any question that you do not want to answer. The results of this study may be presented at scholarly conferences or published in professional journals.

Benefits and Risks

This research will help provide digital humanities scholars with better embedded analytic tools at different levels of complexity. Since we are interviewing journals with few editors there is a chance that your comments will be indirectly associated with you despite our attempts to keep everyone anonymous. If you feel that your comments may pose a risk to you, you are free to withhold all or some of the data from the interview.
