The Walterdale theatre has a long history in this neighbourhood. Initially it was one of the two fire halls in the town - the horses that were used to pull the first fire engines were cared for in a horse pen between the current Walterdale Theatre and the big Fringe Festival sign. The Tall tower in this building and the similar one at the Varscona across the street were used for hanging the fire hoses to let them dry out. Now the tower houses the theatre bell and the Walterdale is the one theatre in town that rings their bell 5 minutes before showtime. It is a tradition for the cast to run up and ring it together before the show. The Canadian comdey show SCTV also filmed at the Walterdale - in the credits of some of the original shows you can see the name “Old Fire Hall Productions” - that’s the Walterdale Theatre!
