Embedded Voyeur

Navigating to webpage

1. Navigate to a site that has Voyeur embedded in Open Journal Systems. For example, we have a dummy OJS site at http://coreyslavnik.com/ojs/index.php/firstjournal/issue/current.

2. In the left hand corner there is a small voyeur panel labeled 'Voyeur Tools'. In this panel the tool default is set to Cirrus where it shows the frequency of words on the page in a word cloud.

3. In the top right hand corner of the Voyeur panel there are three buttons: Options, Export, and Help. By moving the mouse over one of these buttons a short summary of what the button does appears.

- Options

By clicking the Options button you can set certain tool options. In Cirrus and Summary you can set the 'Stop Words List' to either 'none', 'Taporware(English)' or 'VĂ©ronis (French)'. In Frequency Grid you can set the 'Stop Words List' to either 'Taporware(English)' or 'VĂ©ronis (French)', choose a Comparison Corpus and set a Minimum Z-Score. In Bubbles and Reader there are no options.

- Export

By clicking the Export button a popup window appears telling you that there isn't enough room to display the window in the current space. By clicking 'OK', a new window will be opened showing a full screen version of the tool. By clicking 'Cancel' you remain on the page embedded with Voyeur.

- Help

By clicking the Help button a popup window appears telling you that there isn't enough room to display the window in the current space. By clicking 'OK', a new window will be opened showing a full screen version of the tool. By clicking the Help button once more in the full screen version a window appears giving you a summary of what the tool does.

4. Clicking on the 'Reveal' button below Voyeur brings up a menu where you can specify filters or change the tool being displayed.

5. In the popup menu you can choose to reveal all items in the entire journal, reveal items in current published issue, reveal a selected amount of current published issues, or reveal items associated with the currently viewed page. This is done by checking the box beside the desired filter then clicking the submit button at the bottom of the menu. You can also filter by time by choosing a time period in the drop down menu. Once you click submit, the voyeur panel changes to represent your filter or tool choice.

In the Reveal popup menu you can also change the tool displayed. By changing the tool, Voyeur displays a different text analysis representation. Below is a summary of the different tools.

Bubbles

- Words on the page appear in the screen as bubbles. The larger the word/bubble is, the more frequent it appears on the page. The darkness of the word and outline of the bubble also represent more frequent words. The more frequent the word is the darker blue the word appears and the blacker the bubble's outline is.

Cirrus

- Cirrus is a word cloud where the most frequent word in the document are displayed. The larger the word is, the more frequent it appears on the page. By hovering over a word a number appears telling you how many times that word appears in the page. By clicking a word, Voyeur opens in a new window to give you more information on the frequency of the word.

Frequency Grid

- This tool shows overall word frequencies for the entire corpus as well as information about how word frequencies are spread out over documents within the corpus. Hover over column headers and buttons for more information. This table shows the frequency of the words on the page in descending order of frequency. By scrolling to the right, there is a trend graph that shows where in the document the word occurs.

Links

- This tool finds collocates for words and displays links between them using a force directed graph. This is like a web where all words are a different color depending on which post there are the most hits(places where the word appears). The bigger the word is, the more frequent it is on the page. When you hover over a word it tells you which post it occurs in and how many links and hits(times the word occurs in the post). Double-click a word to find its collocates; right-click a word to remove it, or make it "sticky"; right-click an empty area to save the graph to an image file.

Reader

- With the reader all posts are color coded on the left hand side of Voyeur. By navigating through the left side bar you can read all the posts one by one.

Summary

- This gives you a summary of the entire document. It gives you the longest and shortest document, highest vocabulary density, most frequent words, notable peaks in frequency and distinctive words. Some of these categories have a trend graph showing where in the document the word occurs.
